{Hello Route. Nanao's sitting at a picnic table in New Bark Town, hands folded neatly on the table. One hand's knuckles are wrapped in a handkerchief, but she stares levelly at the camera, eyes utterly serious.}

Hello. I would be grateful if someone out there was able to provide an answer to my questions. Don't worry, I only have two. {She looks away for a moment, swallowing.}

How were we brought here, and does anyone know why? I think I understand where we are, even if the premise is absurd, but it is the how and why that yet eludes me.

{A Pidgey chirps somewhere off camera, and Nanao's fingers clench and uncurl.}

A precis on what happened might be nice as well, considering that this town looks like it's been ravaged by a storm.

{That said, she reaches out and clicks off the feed. She'll be wandering around New Bark for a while at least, so feel free to approach her if you see her!}

I can do that.... Lancer. {Although she's still kind of thrown for a loop, she's willing to let things slide.}

Can you explain Pokemon to me? There are some things I don't... quite understand.

{Like how she's meant to fight with the damn things.}

Sure thing. [He whistled softly, calling a Houndoom from off-camera to sit next to him with an eager, attentive look.]

So these guys are the native creatures in this world. The objective is to catch them, train alongside them, and fight with them. They all have special powers--my Olldóiteán here can breathe fire, for example.

As for why having them fight each other's such a big deal, I don't really know. They seem to enjoy it, though.

{Nanao gapes. Sir, you have a horse for a dog.}

A-and do we all get one? {wait, how many pokeballs was she given again?}

{someone hasn't figured out that she has a pokemon all to herself yet}

Course we do--it'd be pretty hard if we were on our own for getting our first one, you know?

You should have somethin' on you that looks like this. [He held up the Houndoom's currently empty Pokeball.] Find it and press this little button here.

Hmm... {brb rifling through her bag.}

{She pulls out one, and taps the button. One of these little guys pops out and burbles happily at Nanao.}

Well, that's... Not exactly what I thought a pokemon would look like.

...Huh. Don't think I've ever seen one of those before--looks like a Ghost type, probably.

Anyway, you should probably get used to that. They're all pretty drastically different.

There are types of Pokemon..? {TEACH HER LANCER-SENSEI}

It seems I'm never going to stop learning.

Yeah, there's a whole lot of elemental types. I like to use Fire-types, myself.

Now that I think of it, I guess there is a lot to learn in this place.

And here I was thinking that I'd learned almost everything possible after a century and a bit... {The Yamask worbles at Nanao, and she hesitantly pokes it back.}

Do you know how many types of Pokemon there are?

{So many questions - hopefully Lancer doesn't mind answering them all.}

Good question, lemme think... There's fire, grass, water, fighting...uh, dragon, flying, ghost...

[Is he counting on his fingers?]

Ice, ground, bug, normal...er...psychic's one, I think...then you've got poison, dark, electric, steel, rock...that's probably it, I think. So that'd make it seventeen, right?

{Nanao is dutifully taking notes on all of these.}

Steel, Rock... {Mental arithmetic time...} Yes, that's seventeen types.

...wow. That's more than I anticipated.

Better that than have only a few, right? It'd get boring pretty fast that way.

I suppose so. Still, it's going to be interesting trying to remember which pokemon is what type.

It ain't all that hard once you get used to it. Usually you can get a pretty good hint or two by looking at 'em.

At the very least, if it's got wings it's probably a flying-type.

I'll make extra sure to remember that one. {She flicks her notebook closed with a decisive snap. Her gaze softens a little after she tucks it away.}

{Nanao shrugs, a tired smile pulling up one corner of her mouth.}

You might as well - it's not like there's much else for me to do.

If you say so. Like I said, you can call me Lancer--most people do. But my real name, since I'm pretty sure you'll be interested in that, is Cu Chulainn.

Cu - Cu Chulainn?! {Her voice rises to a squeak, eyes the size of the moon.}

B-but your hair is blue! {that is clearly the most important thing here}

...Yeah? [And?]

It's always been this color. Am I missin' some kinda joke here?

It's, it's uh... not what I expected from a -- man such as yourself? {Her mind is running eight million miles per hour right now.}

I don't understand, how is this possible...

Short version: Lot of magic. The 'how' isn't really all that important, kid.

Lots of magic, huh... {Is every myth true, if Cu Chulainn himself is here in the flesh?}

I suppose I can live with that explanation.

Eh, it's a whole complicated thing. Doesn't matter all that much, anyway.
